Networks are not “members” as such but are structures approved by the Global Network. Networks should provide opportunities for support and sharing at a local level that can further enhance the benefits of membership.

Through such networks, healthcare services can:

• draw on the experience of other members via a range of national/regional networking activities 
• receive support from members achieving a high level of implementation of the Global Standards
• share and access resources and information 
• collaborate on tobacco related activities and projects, addressing local issues to improve national/regional approaches to tobacco management
• participate in a national/regional validation process involving independent validation of self-audit results against the Global Standards.

Forming a network requires a leader, an initial driver, to inform, inspire and motivate other healthcare services within the same region or country to implement the Global Standards.

A network is formed when:

• 3 or more healthcare services within a country or defined region to commit to working together to support the implementation of the Global Network Standards and concept.
• Agree a member or a relevant Institute to coordinate the network and lead member activities and networking on the local level
• Identify a contact person for the network to receive correspondence and communication between Global Network and network members. 
• Commit to abide by the Global Network Code of Conduct and agree not to recieve any funding from tobacco companies or subsidiaries, agents or consultants. 

Basic functions of a national/regional coordinating institute include:

• Provide the communication link between the Global Network Coordinating Centre and network members and representation of network members at Global Network meetings and activities
• Join new members to the Global Network and share the self-audit results of members with the update of membership details within a minimum 3-year period
• Support the adaptation, translation and dissemination of the GNTH materials and tools at local level, as needed
• Promoting sharing and learning activities on the local level and participation in Global Network development, sub-groups and training activities
• Share information received from Global Network with members and promote engagement by members in the decision-making and strategic processes of the Global Network
• Centralising information at a local level to support evaluation, accreditation and recognition of the implementation activities and achievements of the healthcare services within the network
• Report on the local tobacco control situation and advocate for the Global Network when linking with local policy makers to influence national legislation
• Promote awareness campaigns for the prevention of tobacco (World No Tobacco Day) and collaboration with public health and tobacco control advocates to fulfil the aims of the Global Network
